Touch Up Car Paint Guide
Car glass is not repaired like painted bodywork
Before polishing a windscreen scratch, check whether the mark is surface contamination, a light wiper haze or a groove deep enough to catch a fingernail. Deep damage can distort vision and may need professional glass repair or replacement.
A scratch in automotive glass is different from a scratch in clear coat. Bodywork compound and touch-up paint are not suitable fixes for windscreen damage. Very light marks can sometimes be improved with a glass-specific polishing system, but deep scratches should not be aggressively ground out in the driver’s field of view.
Start by ruling out contamination
- Clean the glass with a dedicated glass cleaner.
- Use a clay or glass-safe decontamination method for bonded residue.
- Inspect the mark from inside and outside the vehicle.
- Run a clean fingernail lightly across it—if the groove is obvious, treat it as deeper damage.
When polishing may help
Light wiper haze and very fine surface marks can respond to cerium-oxide or glass-specific systems when used correctly. Keep the glass temperature controlled and avoid concentrating friction in one small spot.
When to stop
- The scratch is in the main viewing area and causes optical distortion.
- The glass is chipped or cracked.
- The mark is deep enough that significant material would need to be removed.
- You are unsure whether the windscreen remains roadworthy.
Before you start
- Work on a clean, cool panel out of strong wind or direct heat.
- Read the specific product instructions before sanding or coating.
- Prepare only the damaged area you actually need to repair.
- Keep clean cloths, masking materials and lighting ready before opening paint.
After the repair
Allow the coating to cure before washing aggressively, applying strong chemicals or trying to polish it. Fresh paint may feel dry at the surface while remaining softer underneath. Giving the repair time to harden reduces the chance of pulling an edge, smearing colour or marking the clear coat during final finishing.
