Touch Up Car Paint Guide
Why paint matched to a code differs from a generic colour
A can labelled simply 'silver' or 'black' may not match the manufacturer's precise colour formula. Paint mixed to a verified code is a stronger starting point, although age, fading and prior repairs can still affect the final appearance.
| Format | Best for | Main strength |
|---|---|---|
| Paint pen | Stone chips, narrow scratches, tiny marks | Maximum control |
| Brush bottle | Small irregular chips and local paint loss | More paint without a spray pattern |
| Aerosol | Scuffs and wider prepared patches | Even coverage across a larger area |
Do not choose by price alone
A cheap applicator is expensive if it is wrong for the repair. Spraying a 3 mm stone chip creates unnecessary masking and overspray; trying to brush a 15 cm scuff can leave obvious brush texture.
The paint match matters before the format
First identify the car using the paint finder. Then inspect the damage depth and area. Only after that should you decide whether a pen, bottle or aerosol is the sensible application method.
What every method still needs
- A clean, degreased surface.
- Stable edges with no loose paint.
- Primer where exposed substrate requires it.
- Thin colour build.
- Adequate curing time before polishing or washing.
Test the method on a small area first
Whenever a repair product changes or softens the paint surface, use a discreet test area before treating the full mark. Check compatibility, drying behaviour and the way the finish looks once the product has flashed. A five-minute test is far easier to correct than an unsuitable process spread across half a panel.
Good lighting prevents over-correction
Inspect the panel from more than one angle and, where possible, in both diffuse daylight and a direct inspection light. Paint defects can disappear from one viewing angle and become obvious from another, especially on metallic finishes. Stop once the defect is acceptably reduced rather than continuing simply because more correction is possible.
