A pen is precise, a brush bottle carries more paint, and an aerosol spreads colour evenly over a wider prepared area. The “best” option changes with the job.

Do not choose by price alone
A cheap applicator is expensive if it is wrong for the repair. Spraying a 3 mm stone chip creates unnecessary masking and overspray; trying to brush a 15 cm scuff can leave obvious brush texture.
The paint match matters before the format
First identify the car using the paint finder. Then inspect the damage depth and area. Only after that should you decide whether a pen, bottle or aerosol is the sensible application method.

- A clean, degreased surface.
- Stable edges with no loose paint.
- Primer where exposed substrate requires it.

Temperature and drying time matter
Touch-up products behave best when the panel and paint are within the application range stated on the product. Very cold paint can thicken and level poorly; a hot panel can make solvent flash too quickly. Give each layer time to settle before adding more, and do not judge the final texture while the coating is still soft.
Aim for protection and colour first
A small DIY repair is successful when it seals exposed substrate, reduces the visual contrast and remains durable. Chasing a perfectly flat invisible finish on a tiny chip can lead to unnecessary sanding of sound factory paint. Refine the repair only after it has cured and only if the benefit is worth the extra correction.
