Touch Up Car Paint Guide
Modern car paint is a stack of functional layers
A repair works best when you replace only the layers that are missing: substrate protection, primer, colour and clear coat.
| Layer | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Substrate | Metal or plastic panel underneath the coating |
| Primer | Promotes adhesion and protects/prepares the substrate |
| Colour/basecoat | Provides the vehicle colour and effect |
| Clear coat | Adds gloss and environmental protection on systems that use it |
Why damage depth matters
A superficial mark may only affect clear coat. A stone chip can cut through colour to primer or metal. If you apply colour without recognising the missing layer beneath it, the repair may sink, corrode or have a visible edge.
Solid, metallic and pearl paints behave differently
Solid colours rely mainly on pigment. Metallic finishes add reflective flake whose orientation affects appearance. Pearl systems use effect pigments and may be multi-stage. The more complex the finish, the more important controlled application becomes.
Local repair vs full refinishing
Touch-up paint is designed to improve and protect small damage. Full refinishing uses broader sanding, spraying and blending to recreate a continuous panel finish. Both are legitimate methods; they solve different sizes of problem.
Before you start
- Work on a clean, cool panel out of strong wind or direct heat.
- Read the specific product instructions before sanding or coating.
- Prepare only the damaged area you actually need to repair.
- Keep clean cloths, masking materials and lighting ready before opening paint.
After the repair
Allow the coating to cure before washing aggressively, applying strong chemicals or trying to polish it. Fresh paint may feel dry at the surface while remaining softer underneath. Giving the repair time to harden reduces the chance of pulling an edge, smearing colour or marking the clear coat during final finishing.
